RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
Hey mate, look I've never fished with flourocarbon but by all accounts it is the "ducks nutz".
The only thing I'd like to say is that it has been around in the USA and other parts for a lot longer than people realise but hasn't made nylon obsolete. Perhaps that is because of the price? It may also suggest that a good quality nylon leader (for heavier applications anyway) may not be that far behind the fluoro's? I will say that I used Penn 10X and black magic for several years with pretty good results but someone on this forum (may have been chris actually?) suggested Jinkai and I now use it for everything. No doubt others will have thier ideas and favourites so it will be interesting to here from them? Catch Ya! |

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
hey lads, i use jinkai for all applications better than 40 ponud, its thin and strong, good knot strength, for my light gear i use yamatoyo flurocarbon, not too sure why, i havent found 8 and 10 pound jinkai yet, that would be the reason.
fishing looks like taking a back seat the next few days, my boats full of water, and my fridge is full of beer, so i will take whatever hamish throws at me, cheers guys will talk to yas soon. Chris |

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
I use the 60 lb Jinkai for flickin lures, tied to my braid. It is a bit more slippery than mono as it is abrasive resistant, however it doesn't kink the same.
I have a mate who uses 100lb mono and we get similar results. Over the years I have lost more lures but have caught more fish and got more strikes too. |

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
I use flurocarbon from time to time. It is good stuff for lure casting etc. No need when you're out the reef chasing reds and stuff but when you want a tough trace that's abrasive resistant and doesn't kink a lot while knot tying, flurocarbon is good. I'm currently using some Black Magic tough trace for trace and "supple" for leader. Neither are flurocarbon but do their jobs very well. It's early days but the tough trace is a lot cheaper than the flurocarbon and I'm very happy with it.

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
I am using Penn 10X leader atm but havnt used flurocarbon before. I did use a Japanes leader about 12 months ago that left the Penn stuff for dead. Only reason i didnt keep on using it was that its 3 times more expensive than the Penn leader. The japanese stuff was thinner, stronger and knots didnt slip.

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
yeah geoffjy, watch out for 10x with braid. It is designed with a really hard outer core for abrasion resistance and because of this knots like albrights won't grip real well and will often slip after prolonged casting. I'd recommend Jinkai or Black Magic.
Fishing is not a matter of life and death - it's much more serious than that! |

RE: flourocarbon or mono leaders
No worries Lee. I am currently using Bionic Braid and apart from the price tag, i love it and have never had problems with it.
