RE: live baiting trout
Any of those small cod that you tend to catch bottom bouncing are great Trout livies. Also, fusiliers (small ones) are good live or as strip bait for Trout....My old's sweat by fresh gills as bait for Trout also.........

RE: live baiting trout
Hey Teabag, you know that ugly looking cod you caught behind that island near Possession? I read an article saying that they were great bait on the reef and that they are also good eating.

RE: live baiting trout
I reckon the best trout bait (or for anything on the reef for that matter) is those little barrle shaped banana fusiliers. Occasionally we get a trout that has eaten one and even more rarely hook one on a bait jig and they are just lethal. I recently got a few stick baits that represent them well. Will keep you posted
I only wish there was a way they could be caught easily, they don't take bait jigs like the yellowtail fusiliers. |

RE: live baiting trout
Well if you find a way to catch them little buggars please let me know. I'm keen as mustard to get a few.
Occassionally we pick up a few herring from the island and keep 10 or so alive and hit the trout. The buggars go mental and some times you can't stop them. I did a trip out on a game boat in the light tackle comp last year and they picked up some baits by using the bait jigs in about 40 metres of water. They looked pretty similar to a pillie or something, maybe a bit bigger and round like a cigar or something. I reckon they would do the trick also. The deckie got hammered by something big on the way up that day. Looked like reds or somethign on the sounder to me. But they were more interested in billfish then the red fish. Pazz |
