number of commercial crabbers- me having a whinge

After reading a few posts about commercial crabbers in Hinchinbrook, specifically the number of crabbers operating in the channel, i thought i would post and clear a few things up.
I keep hearing whispers in different places of there being 40, 50 or 60 commercial crabbers in the channel at peak times. WTF??? where? i am a commercial crabber and there are def NOT that many here. Normally there are 14 crabbers at my count- and of those, only 6 that i know of are full time core crabbers, 3 of those i am not sure how often they work as i don't know them very well, and the others only work part time and spend most of their time farming or working elsewhere. I don't know where the heck the 40 licenses came from; i am assuming it is the number of people who have recent history in the Hinchinbrook region- but this means very little in real terms as anyone who comes in temporarily can put brief history on, no matter how small or brief their impact here.
occasionally a few crabbers blow in and out, and work part time or come full time for a short period- but considering we are on the water nearly everyday and see virtually no impact from these people, they are hardly worth mentioning. In fact, after recently talking to another crabber who has worked the area for many, many years, he reckons there are less pro crabbers here now than there were 15 years ago.
As for fishers moving to the Hinchinbrook region to crab and adding pressure to the system, it only makes sense that people would only continue to crab here if it was viable for them to do so. If there was no crabs or major pressure on stocks, they would not make a dollar and hence would leave. In addition, with the recent latent effort culling of licenses, it makes sense that the same (or less) number of crabbers are working in qld that have worked for many years, and if they move to one area, they are leaving another. There are no magical new license-holding crabbers that pop up and take their place in their old grounds; these places are being rested or have closed. There are the same number of crabbers as before, or less, they are just occasionally redistributed. And yet, there is a continued push for more zoning from green groups
What some see as distressing is that with continuing closures and zoning crabbers will congregate in the few areas that are left open and "clear them out" or WORSE clear out the crabbers in those areas and take over their "areas." Seriously though, crabbers know if they can make money somewhere, they wouldn't be crabbing in an area with no potential. And in my experience, long term crabbers who are serious about their job never get pushed out- they work smarter and make better gear and always survive because they are good at their job.
Some people seem to think that further zoning is the answer, but let me tell you it’s not. We are already “zoned” to a point in that we can only work in Qld, and not other states. If people lose their jobs because of further zoning they are forced to move elsewhere (displacement) and obviously people don’t seem to like that very much and if they compensated for their loss of job, people like it even less. However, remember that just because people are new to an area, does not mean that they have any less of a right to work in that area. Commercial fishers pay THOUSANDS of dollars a year to operate and bring money into communities by utilising goods and services where they work so how is that detrimental to the community? Further zoning only leads to more displacement, more people congregating in smaller areas. If anything, more areas need to be reopened so we can spread out again- not because of any crab population decline, but just so we don’t have to have everyone whining all the time about how we all work on top of one another.

Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
13/06/2010
Night-time raid costs illegal crabber his boat and $5000

13 June 2010

A recreational fisher has lost his boat and been fined $5,000 by Brisbane's Magistrates Court on Wednesday after being found with an illegal haul of mud crabs.

Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin said the fisher was found with excess, undersized and female mud crabs.

"The crabs were found in a secret onboard compartment by Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officers," the Minister said.

"This was a deliberate attempt to ignore Queensland's fishing rules and regulations, which are designed to ensure our fishery remains sustainable.

"The fisher was convicted for this offence and his boat, which has been forfeited to the crown, could be destroyed.

"This action sends a clear warning to people who deliberately conceal fisheries products with the intent to get away with illegal catch.

"Any fisher who gets caught with a secret compartment containing illegal catch is at risk of losing their boat.

"The recreational fisher from Brisbane was convicted on three charges - possessing 13 female, 10 undersized and 22 excess mud crabs."

"This is not a case of a recreational fisher not knowing the rules, it was a calculated attempt at breaking them," the Minister said.

"The hidden compartment wasn't found when QBFP officers first searched the boat. It was only after a thorough inspection by officers that the compartment was found.

The Minister said male mud crabs have a bag limit of 10 and a size limit of 15 centimetres.

"We take these offences very seriously and fines are high for those found guilty," he said.

"In this case the defendant has also lost his boat, which is estimated to be worth about $8,000.

"This latest court ruling comes after a commercial fisher was fined $45,000 in April for being in possession of 158 female mud crabs.

"People willing to take a chan ce and break the law should know that our officers will catch and prosecute them.

"This fisher went to great lengths to conceal his illegal catch, but it's not a matter of if you get caught but when."

QBFP officer Hayley Meiers said the investigation was in response to complaints from the public about night-time activity at boat ramps around Brisbane.

"We want to thank the community for being vigilant on this occasion - with their help we can continue to target our resources at those who ignore the law," she said.

"We inspected the defendant's boat in February at the Pinkenba boat ramp.

"After searching the boat, we found a concealed compartment under the floor containing two bags of regulated crabs.

"The compartment had clearly been constructed with the intent to conceal fish catch.

"More than 700,000 people fish each year in Queensland and the majority of them adhere to the rules.

"In 2009, officers carried ou t 43,687 fisheries inspections which resulted in a total of 1094 fines or prosecutions for illegal fishing, while a further 670 people were cautioned.

"These figures reflect the fact that Queensland has a very high compliance rate within the fishing sector at nearly 97 percent."

Ms Meiers said anyone with information on suspect illegal fishing activity should contact the 24-hour Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116.
Ms Meiers said anyone with information on suspect illegal fishing activity should contact the 24-hour Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116.

Hi all,
As most of you are aware, I have been with the Fish and Boat publication for some time (now in my 4th year) and truly believe that this is much more than just a fishing and boating publication. My contact with the media, advertisers and the contributors over the time makes me think of each of you as being part of our extended family.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

I recently received a job offer that I couldn't turn down and have had to make the hard decision to leave the Fish and Boat publication. This has not been an easy decision. However, the fact that I am leaving the publication in the hands of another passionate fisherman makes it a lot easier for me.

As of the August edition of Fish and Boat, I will be handing the keyboard and baitcaster over to Lee Brake. You may know him from his time as a writer with us with sections such as the "Tackle Rat", and the "Salts of the Sea" articles, to name just a few.

To cast back for a short time, Fish and Boat was the first publication that Lee started to write for and it is very encouraging to see the development that he has made through the ranks to now take over the editorial role and continue to develop the publication.

Within the next week, Lee will be flying up to Maningrida and spending an intensive week with me to enable a smooth handover. There is also the very strong chance that we will hit the water through that time, but only when the tides are right.....

Once again, I really can't explain how much I have enjoyed my time with each and every one of you and hope to see you all again at another stage (hopefully out on the water). If you would like to keep in contact with me, my mobile number and postal address stays the same and my alternative email is: info@creativecroc.com

Thanks for your friendship and support.

at a recent meeting with commercial and recreational fishers, the topic of reporting recreational catch came up, with mixed feelings of course. What are people's ideas on this? how would it work/be run in a practical way? the benefits obviously would be that all catches across all sectors would be recorded and the age old arguemtn of "how much do recs take?" would be answered and could be used to inform stock reporting ect and create a shared responsiblity for our wild fisheries across all sectors. Who would pay for this? i'm sure the govt wouldn't considering according to another post they are not even supporting recfish anymore, which is a terrible blow to the rec fishing industry- anna bligh just needs to money to pay back the exorbitant debts that her gvt created and is picking on all volunteer, charity and organisational groups she thinks she can walk over. I hope recfish sticks it to her! but seriously, what does everyone think about reporting their catch?

Hey Guys

Did a quick trip to Kalpower last week after hearing the road to Bathurst Heads was open.

Got through Lakefield National Park no worries and got up to the marriot river to realise there was still plenty of water in the soaks around. After walking the soaks and looking for an alternative we decided to give them a hit as we had the winch to get through. We got through no worries to realise that we would be the first through for the year as a number of people had turned around at the second soak as it was pretty wet and muddy. The turbo just ate the soaks no worries.

We managed to get a nice boar walking stupidly on the road on the way in, so we gave him a touch up and continued on our way.

On the way in we noticed the warning lights on the dash of the cruiser on, but the old girl was running sweet so we kept going. Once we arrived we thought that the alternator may have got some water/dirty in it. After pulling the car apart to get at it (why to they make things so hard to get at) and pulling the back off the alternator we found the problem, cleaned it out and the cruiser was fine again.

We caught a variety of fish on slab baits, whole baits, hard body lures and poppers. The Barra were pretty thick as no one had been in yet and manage to score a few nice ones for the ice box. The majority were around the 650-750mm with the biggest going around 850mm. Blue salmon were also around. We found the fish went off the bite a bit the longer we were there.

On the last afternoon, when the fish was slow, I threw a popper on my rod and the fish came to life. I scored a nice queenie and a nice blue salmon and a few hits (but misses) from a few nice barra. It really got the fish going and my dad and brother caught some nice fish.

Overall it was a great few days off, nice to catch a few nice fish. Always a beautiful place. Also good to be there on our own as well.

All in all it was a great trip

Just thought i'd share a report on the Cairns Estuary scene. Been having some luck over the past couple of weeks out on the flats chasing Grunter. Many school size (just under or over) and quite a few in the mid to high 40 range. I dropped a 55ish last night at the boat and my mate picked up one at 60cm. The dark moon has been the pick and all fish have come in 1-1.5m of water out from the Hospital.

How have the other Cairns anglers been going???

Hi Gang,

The guys and girls from Cardwell CG are again holding thier fishing competition which is designed as a social/safety awareness/family orientated fishing event. At this stage I'm still working through the details which aren't 100% polished off yet.

This email is just to give everyone the heads up because last year was thier first event and my family and I really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere (and the spit roast pork dinner!).

I will update this post when I can but looks like it may be in early Oct with breifing and social drinks/bbq on friday night, dinner on Sat night (spit roast) and weigh-in and BBQ for Sunday lunch (early lunch so people can travel home).

I haven't absolutely confirmed entry fee yet but it looks like being around $55 for adults and $25 for kids (under 10). That should get you into the comp and bbq lunch on Sunday at very least. Last year prizes included a 2 night stay on a luxury yacht, accommodation @ port Hinchinbrook and many other goodies which by all acounts are back for this year.

If anyone is interested keep early Oct (~9 & 10th?) free and watch this post or contact Cardwell CG.
